Pakistan Investor Visa Guide: Business, SIFC, and Residency Routes

Updated September 23, 20266 min read

What are your visa options as a foreign investor in Pakistan? There are three distinct routes, run through NADRA's online visa system, each suited to a different stage of investment. Here's how they actually differ.

Route 1: the standard Business Investor visa

This is the baseline investor track. You qualify with any one of:

  • Real estate ownership in Pakistan worth more than $100,000, or
  • Investment in a Pakistan-registered company or partnership of at least $50,000, or
  • Another qualifying form of investment in Pakistan of at least $50,000

It's issued as a multiple-entry visa valid for 3 or 5 years, with extension options. This is the right starting point for most investors setting up a standard private limited company through the process in our company registration guide.

Route 2: the SIFC Investor Visa (fast-track)

The Special Investment Facilitation Council, established in June 2023, approved a dedicated investor visa category in December 2023 for larger or strategically prioritized projects. The key difference: any visa validity longer than one year under this track requires an SIFC recommendation — meaning your project needs to be significant enough, or in a priority sector (energy, agriculture, mining, IT), to get that endorsement. This is positioned as the genuine "single window" fast-track route, and it's one of the concrete, practical reasons SIFC access is worth pursuing for larger investments — see our broader take on why SIFC matters across priority sectors.

Route 3: a general Business Visa

For shorter business visits that don't involve making an actual investment — due diligence trips, partner meetings, site visits — NADRA also runs a general Business Visa, distinct from the investor category above. This is the right choice before you've committed capital, not after.

Does an investor visa lead to permanent residency?

Not by itself — this is a distinction worth getting right, because it's easy to conflate a multi-year investor visa with residency status. The investor visa is a renewable, multi-year entry and stay permit. It doesn't automatically convert into permanent residency or citizenship.

Separately, the Board of Investment has announced a dedicated permanent-residency scheme: real estate investment of $100,000 to $300,000 can qualify a foreign national for permanent resident status, with a further, conditional pathway toward citizenship. This is a distinct application from your investor visa, not an automatic upgrade.

A note on accuracy: some third-party advisory sites cite a rule letting investors apply for residency after just six months of continuous stay in Pakistan. We looked for this specifically and could not verify it against any official Pakistani government source — so we're not repeating it here as fact. If you've seen this claim elsewhere, ask whoever is advising you to point you to the actual government notification before relying on it.

The bottom line

Match the visa route to where you actually are: a Business Visa for pre-investment visits, the standard Business Investor visa once you've committed $50,000+, and the SIFC track if your project is large or strategically prioritized enough to secure that recommendation. If long-term residency matters to your plans, that's a separate BOI application built around real estate investment, not something your investor visa gives you automatically.
